Who Is At Risk For Flu?

Now that summer is almost over, in most parts of the United States, and students are going back to school, we are being warned about the Flu season and the need for Flu shots. There are three types of Flu viruses, of which A and B are seasonal flu viruses, and C, which is a type that does not cause epidemics and is much milder.

In the 2009 season we were highly warned about N1H1 virus that was a different type seen in the United States. The N1H1 virus is  also referred to as swine Flu, and the vaccine is now included with type A vaccine. Therefore, seasonal flu shot vaccines  now  contain a combination of  type A and type B to protect our bodies from flu viruses.

Those people who are more at risk for complications from the flu virus are people over 65, people with chronic medical problems, people with weak immune systems, and women who are pregnant.  People who fall into these categories should have flu shots every season. There are many things that can be done daily to reduce the risk of seasonal flu.  Wash your hands often, maintain a healthy diet, drink lots of water, get plenty of fresh air, get plenty of sleep, and exercise regularly. Avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated areas is advisable for those that are at risk .

When a member of your household does contact flu, be sure and wash all linens, eating utensils and dishes thoroughly. Make it a point to be extra careful of germs when touching anything used by the person who is ill, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling anything they have touched. You can't be to careful.

High Sodium In Foods We Eat

Studies are reporting that 90% of Americans are consuming to much salt.  The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC)  reports that our daily intake of salt should only be 2,300  mg., yet we are consuming 3,466 mg according to a CDC  report in 2005.  Elderly people with high blood pressure should limit their intake of sodium to 1,500 mg per day.

To much sodium in diets can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and strokes. Reducing the intake of sodium in Americans diets seems to be a major challenge for many people, and some of the causes are the foods eaten in fast food places and restaurants.  Good examples of fast food sodium content is the McDonald's quarter pounder with cheese that contains 1,190 mg of sodium, and a Big Mac contains 1,040 mg of of sodium.  One slice of Pizza Hut's cheese pizza contains 530 mg of sodium, and Wendy's Home Style Chicken Fillet Sandwich contains 1,120 mg of sodium, and their Baconator has 1,880 mg of sodium.  Burger King's  Angus Steak Burger contains 1.200 mg of sodium, the BK Veggie Burger has 1,100 mg of sodium.

Some the highest contents of sodium in foods consumed are canned foods, prepared mixes, luncheon meats, crackers, chips,  sauces, and packaged foods. Some over the counter drugs commonly used  that contains sodium are Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, Aleve, and corticosteroid drugs. People who tend to have high blood pressure should always talk to their doctor before taking any of these drugs.

Senior Dating

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Senior dating is on the rise, and many of those that have found themselves single again are looking for companionship of the opposite sex. Seniors can find companions on the internet, senior social groups, senior church groups, or in communities for retired and over 65 group. Newspapers also advertise social events for seniors. Today’s seniors no longer need to be lonely with all the opportunities available.

Senior citizens do not have to give up dating and love just because they find themselves single again. The desire for companionship and intimacy doesn’t automatically end because of your age. With medical advances people are living longer and are much healthier than they were fifty years ago. Viagra is helping many seniors to stay in the dating scene.

Some of the greatest problems senior face is the reaction from their grown children. Children have problems excepting the fact that mom and dad were very romantic in their younger years, but then dating after the death of one of their parents is sometimes very hard for them to get used to. Many grown children have a difficult time realizing that their parents still have the same needs and feelings as younger people do, and still others feel they need to protect the parent from being taken advantage of. Protection might be good to a certain degree, but not overly protective if the parent is of sound mind.

Health can sometimes bother seniors dating experience, but having regular medical checkups, and exercising can go a long way in making the dating experience more enjoyable. Aches and pains are unavoidable, especially in bodies that have lived a great deal of life. Just hang in there and visit senior centers and church groups, and life can be very fulfilling for seniors in their golden years.

Senior Marriages

Senior dating helps one decide whether the special person in your life is the one you want to live with. While dating seniors should help family members adjust to the idea that mom or dad has someone special to help make their life much happier and complete. All the legal, money, and housing issues should be resolved before the marriage. If these issues are not resolved before marriage the problems will only fester and get worse if not dealt with.

Married people seem to live longer, happier, and healthier lives. A happily married couple tends to have greater well being than people not married. Most marriages have times of contentment with heights and valleys, but most elderly couples seems to be happier and more content than many younger couples. As the role of work and children comes to an end, couples seem to rely on each other for companionship.

Senior marriages will have health issues as couples age. Couples can age at a different pace, and the less healthier person will tend to rely on the healthier person. There will also be changes in sexual interest and activity as aging process goes on. As the couples mobility and outside activities are restricted they are forced to be together more than they were before the aging process began.

Dementia is another issue that elderly couple often face. It has been reported that one in ten people develop dementia before the age of 65, and that after the age of 85 over half will be afflicted with dementia. It is devastating to realize that the person you have lived with for many years hardly knows you, or is difficult to deal with. All these problems places a great strain on marriages and families. Enjoy the good years and resolve these issues as they come.
