Learn To Read

People of all ages already have a catalog of words stored in their minds. If they learn to spell most of those words then reading is much easier to learn. Pulling words that you know for the purpose of identifying the written or typed work is referred to as "calling your lexicon." Children would not be familiar with that word but even they utilize this method. Next comes decoding.

This is when you have learned to spell and can now recognize a sight vocabulary. This is like setting a path or road and once that is established it gives everyone a leg up on reading. You start sight recognition which is seeing the written word and recalling one that sounds like it or similar to the word. The more the lexicon and decoding skills are practiced the more that your skills improve. It is not all a guessing game anymore.

Now that you have started the actual process of reading, you will want to learn to retain what you have read. At first you need to go slowly. In the future when you can read well then you can speed along. For now, you should go slow. Make an effort to put the information from what you have read into your memory. Read the next paragraph and return to what you have stored from the first. See how much you have retained. Learning this is helpful for everyday living and reading. A student will find this method of retention invaluable for all of their classes.
